Bigfoot Poses on the Brooklyn Bridge

We seemed to be doing a series of cryptids on the bridge... But my son has asked me to stop the Brooklyn Bridge stuff, so sadly, I don't think there will be any Chupacabras or Loch Ness Monsters posed with New York landmarks.

I had thought the Sasquatch might be a safe bet as the last two library books my son brought home were both literally titled "Bigfoot." But after my son looked at this particular image, he told me solemnly that napkins like this were making him look weird in class. I think maybe we will focus on some video game characters or main stream superheroes in the near future.

Zak Saturday and Komodo

About once every six months, Ansel is reminded how much he likes the series "The Secret Saturdays."

And once every six months, I am reminded that there is really nothing plausible for me to do with Zak Saturday's hair.  I drew his face and his pet/ family friend Komodo, the Komodo dragon, in a more realistic manner, but Zak's two toned hair really defies intervention.

Ansel's summer program is over at noon, so he is technically not taking a packed lunch to camp these days.  But he was feeling a bit napkin deprived, and felt that he needed to demonstrate what the napkins looked like to the people he hangs out with from 8 to 12.  I guess this napkin is just going along for a morning snack.

American Holstein Minotaur

Ansel is still listening to "The Lightning Thief" on Audible.

This Minotaur is definitely not accurate to Mr. Riordan's description in the book.  After looking at various swarthy and threatening Minotaur images on Google late last night, I thought why shouldn't a bovine man who lives on American soil be white bread and dairy farm appropriate?

Ansel was not terribly impressed this morning, but he had come down with strep overnight, and ate lunch at home anyway.

Ansel discovered yesterday that he loves listening to "The Lightning Thief" on Audible.  

He was determined that he was going to listen to all of it (10 plus hours) before bedtime.

I'll admit, I have become confused as to which character appears in which Percy Jackson book at which point in the story- and then there are the movies as well... so I chose a character that I was certain appears early on in the story.  

I spent most of my childhood drawing horses, so I foolishly thought a centaur would be easy for me to pull off quickly.

Wookie and Sasquatch: Chewbacca and Flink

Continuing our Bigfoot theme: last night we followed "The Beast of Wolfe's Bay" and "Iron West" with Doug TenNapel's "Flink"

Ansel is not a big fan of Star Wars (he patiently suffered through his brother's multiyear obsession) but Chewie is still appealing...well, probably for the same reason that Bigfoot is.

I'm not sure what the potential relationship might be here?  Sure, they are both tall, hairy guys with grey noses, but I don't think they would have a language in common, so they won't be able to exchange hair care tips.

Nessie Visits School Cafeteria

We read Doug TenNapel's "Iron West" in the school cafeteria yesterday.  The story includes a Loch Ness style "wingless dragon" deployed by a Native American shaman (later revealed to be an alien) to battle an army of "metal men" and a Transformer-like monster robot made from a locomotive.

There aren't too many spaces at school where one could unleash Nessie, but the lobby and mezzanine cafeteria did seem like a possibility.  My perspectival drawing is usually pretty poor, and napkin distortions make the situation worse, but the kids were at least able to recognize the setting.

We finished reading "The Beast of Wolfe's Bay" and started rereading Doug TenNapel's "Iron West," a graphic novel that includes a Sasquatch in a sort of steam punk old west setting that features cowboys, indians, aliens and special appearance by the Loch Ness Monster.

This all led to the question of why isn't there a Bigfoot superhero?  After a big of Google research, I can report that of course there is the Marvel character of "Sasquatch."  I don't think he is quite what the kids had in mind, however.  Nor does it seem likely that he will be appearing in a major motion picture any time soon. His back story involves a "mystic portal" to the "Realm of Mighty Beasts" which allows a former football player to be possessed by a "mystical beast called Tanaraq"  All of this makes irradiated spider bites and gamma radiation seem like relatively plausible excuses for super powers. 

For the napkin today, I tried to imagine a more palatable super cryptid team.  The guys are wearing pants because, despite all the crotch obscuring fur, it just seemed like a more reasonable solution. 

Bigfoot with Skylanders Lunch

Cryptozoology is never really out with our kids, but reading Erik Evensen's "The Beast of Wolfe's Bay" last night got Ansel specifically interested in Bigfoot.

The pseudo Sasquatch on today's napkin, however,  probably owes more stylistically to Doug TenNappel's graphic novels "Iron West" and "Flink."

He's holding Ansel's Skylanders Lunch Bag.  Maybe he doesn't know how to work a zipper...

Tsul Kalu From Secret Saturdays With Fruit

Ansel was reminded recently how much he liked the "Secret Saturdays."

This character appears in a couple of episodes in the third and final season of the show. 

I substituted a strawberry for his sword to make the image more peaceful for lunch.
