Napkins drawn by Nina Levy for her sons. Daily for 10 years. Now that the kids eat in the school cafeteria: merely occasionally, not daily, but we are stuck with the name.

Infant Ninja in Baby Bjorn Carrier
Even assassins need oral gratification:
While my younger son and I were discussing "The Infant Ninja," we agreed that he should be carried in a Baby Bjorn by a well-armed, deadly looking robot. And that he should have a teething toy that squirted poison gas.
I carried both of our kids in a sling (separately, not ever together, although that was often requested bu the then four year old elder brother) for years until the gel in my vertebrae squeezed out in several places.
But we were definitely not a Baby Bjorn family. There seemed to me something slightly silly about the Bjorns. The design was both vaguely bondage-like and awkwardly sporty.
I realize the complete idiocy of this opinion being expressed by a woman who owned a whole wardrobe of slings. After 12 years of parenting failures, I certainly do not presume to judge anyone for practically anything... much less the use of a Bjorn. For my compulsive baby-sling use, I can only offer the justification that we live in New York and I had to take the train with both kids, early and frequently. In place of a stroller or a front facing Bjorn, the slings were a low profile way to keep strangers from touching the baby... or even breathing directly on him.
A robot with a baby in a sling didn't seem quite right to me when I started the drawing...although the more that I think about it, maybe a nice rainbow sling with rings on a killer robot would be more amusing...
I tried to combine the winsome qualities of the Terminator and the Iron Man/ War Machine suits: i.e., those scary red eye lights and the ridiculous-on-robots humanoid teeth, with the segmented suit with the shoulder mounted grenade launchers. The result on the napkin was both creepy and a bit flat... but the robot is basically backdrop, so I decided not to sweat it too much.
At the last minute, I had to add a Sophie the Giraffe teething toy to the image... We had one of these "mouth animals" during my first son's infancy. I cannot remember who bought it. I knew at the time that it was a somewhat expensive and trendy article. Looking it up now, however, I discover that not only is it a remarkably pricey chew toy, it is the number one selling baby item on Amazon. During my organic-food-making, toxin-fearing, irrational mother of an infant stage, I was aware that Sophie was supposed to be a better, more healthful toy, made of "natural rubber" and "food paint" in France. Of course, subsequently there were rumors of carcinogens and a recall.
I do remember that our Sophie developed a nasty smell that seemed to squirt out from the interior when it was squeezed. I cannot say whether it was from inherent vice, from exposure to my son's saliva, or just poor maintenance on my part,
But it now seems appropriate that the infant ninja's trendy mouth animal might squirt poison gas.

Infant Ninja with Motorcycle Car Seat
Death comes out of a Graco car seat:
My younger son and I have a new daily school commute to the upper west side of Manhattan. Unfortunately, much of the time is spent standing up, packed into one or the other of the two subway trains involved. This is a particularly unpleasant situation if one is, say, the size of an 8 year old, and not accustomed to a New York City subway rush hour. (It seems to be rush hour even at 7 am) I've been doing my best to offer distractions, but so far he has spurned my offerings of music and books.
He has been amenable, however, to passing the time by discussing our much talked about, but still as of yet, nonexistent, family web comic. Axe Cop, the collaborative comic that was created by a 5 year old and his much older comic book industry professional brother is of course an inspiration. My sons are good at coming up with wacky characters, but they have yet to develop any plot for this comic. The younger one suggested on the train last week that perhaps there should not one story, but instead a series of related shorts. That sounded more manageable...but we still need some sort of plot.
Last week on the train, he also hatched the idea of "The Baby Ninja." I suggested maybe it could be "The Infant Ninja." We discussed what sort of infant accessories this ninja might have... throwing star teethers, a car seat that affixes to a motorcycle, a pacifier that doubles as a face mask. It seems also to be quite inspired by Dr McNinja, another webcomic that my sons really enjoy.
Of course, my sons expect me to do all the drawing of this comic....

The Clumsy Ninja Takes on Ultron
What level does the Clumsy Ninja need to achieve in order to take on Ultron?
Of course we had to see the new Avengers movie "The Age of Ultron" when it opened last weekend. I observed the usual family movie viewing phenomenon where the kids' attention tended to wander during any scene with dialogue, and conversely, I found it hard to pay attention during the battle sequences.
"Ultron" has some nice light interpersonal moments like the scene when all the super-powered boys tease each other about who can pick up Thor's hammer. But the movie is mostly devoted to complex digital orchestrations of objects and bodies flying through space and crashing into one another and the surrounding architecture....And why would you be there to see an Avengers movie anyway if not for that?
It is remarkable what can be done with millions of dollars of CGI...But it all looks like a video game to me. To which my sons would say, "So what?" Or, more likely, "Yes!!"
While we are on the topic on digital animation in video games: the kids are still enthusiastically working on "Clumsy Ninja." The game features some subtle and realistic interaction with the ninja character which is not just about running around whacking things. Despite their diligence, however, the kids have only managed to advance their ninjas to level 21 out of 99.
They're definitely going to have to make a lot of progress before the ninjas are ready for Ultron.

Paddington and Clumsy Ninja
Big headed characters that are popular this week at our house:
Yes, the Paddington movie was released on DVD and iTunes a couple of days ago. I had been wondering why the hat wearing bear was on my sons' minds, but now I know it must have been put there by advertising.
Clumsy Ninja continues to be a popular game. The kids report that they are at levels 17 and 20 respectively...this is out of a potential 99 levels. I can see we have a lot more Clumsy Ninja to look forward to.

Clumsy Ninjas
High Five between Ice and Forest Ninjas:
I am afraid my sons may have spent an excessive amount of time playing "Clumsy Ninja" today.
It is an interactive game by Natural Motion. One can "train," tickle, tie balloons to...or if you are my sons, let him dangle pathetically a few feet off the ground, legs kicking haplessly, while shouting sarcastically, "Look! He's Superman!"
My sons just read the above and told me that I made them sound like jerks...but they would like me to add that they have discovered that inflicting dizziness and a tornado on the ninja simultaneously results in something that looks very much like break dancing.
This image is drawn on actual sheet of paper, and not a napkin. It was a sort of a test run because in the not too distant future I need to produce a drawing that is considerably larger than the average dinner napkin. I spent a significant amount of time shopping for paper that would behave sort of like a napkin. I cannot say that I had any success. Napkins are a horrible, uncooperative surface to work on, but ironically, (and pathetically) I cannot seem to cope with a less fragile and less absorbent paper surface.
I'm giving some serious thought to paper tablecloths as a medium.

Banzai Blade with Oni
One just never knows when a video game that nobody in the house has thought of, much less played, in months or years is going to suddenly become absolutely necessary for continued existence.
I am not sure what caused the resurgence of "Banzai Blade" yesterday, but suddenly it was back. It seems to be a fairly straightforward slicing game- Fruit Ninja with running and demons. While not terribly interested in playing it myself, or even hearing about it, I must admit that it has a nice version of the ever receding single point perspective road and some amusing demon faces.
I briefly had the idea that I would make it look more realistic (the running ninja guy in the game is a very cartoony chibi style big head) but the demon faces really defied realism, and it was all I could do just to put the guy in red on the road.

Oni Mask from "Mark of the Ninja"
As of yesterday, Archer's most recent obsession with a game that is too old for him is "Mark of the Ninja."

Axe Cop, Battlepug and Dr. McNinja
"Why must I be plagued by these ridiculous animals?'
We've been catching up on several web comics that we follow during bedtime reading over the last couple of nights.
Axe Cop, Battlepug, and Dr. McNinja all embrace the ridiculous and often include "inappropriate" content... making them particularly delightful as far as our sons are concerned.

Candy Cane Ninja
Ansel was suddenly struck with an overwhelming need for candy canes yesterday...perhaps another child had one in his or her lunch?
I was unable to provide the immediate gratification that he felt he deserved.
But I drew candy canes on a napkin.
Of course, he did not see the napkin as compensation for the lack of the real thing. He told me this morning that I must have drawn them in order to remind myself to buy him some as soon as possible.

Ninjago Kai and Skylanders Dark Spyro
Today it is Ninjago and Skylander: Of course, Kai is wearing his last episode outfit while riding Dark Spyro.

Mr. Stuffins with Defeated Ninja
"Mr. Stuffins" defeats the Ninja: the kids
love the idea of a plush toy who is actually an ill tempered secret
agent. The suction cup pistol was probably not ok for
Quaker lunch.
My apologies to the gods of perspective. It was a late night, and there are no revisions on napkins.

Ninjago Season Finale Kai with Fire Sword on a Shirt
He's been wearing the same shirt every day since September, so I did my best to come up with an alternative....or something new for him to wear constantly until the cuffs literally start to erode off of the sleeves.
Both of the kids were just ridiculously excited about the Ninjago season finale and the new costumes and weapons...(Buy more LEGOs mom!!!)
His brother promptly requested that I paint a shirt for him with 5 Ninjago characters on it.

Ninja and Visible Troll
Unrepentant violence in this one as well as repentant bad drawing: I took another swing at the Ninja with Troll, (see November 9th for the original sketch by my older son) but as Ansel helpfully pointed out, I failed to give the troll two clubs, or spikes, or many of the important features that his brother had provided.

Unidentified Ninja with Invisible Troll
Unidentified ninja with unseen troll: Last
night, our older son made a sketch for me to follow for this napkin for
his brother. Unfortunately, I misunderstood the arm position and
neglected to include the giant troll who was strangely invisible in his
drawing. Below: the first drawing from last night, and then this morning's additions showing what he really wanted me to draw. The second image would certainly have been more fun to do as a napkin, no doubt. If only I had known about that muscular troll with the loin cloth.

Ninjago Kai and the Red Ranger from Power Rangers Samurai
Just how large are those Ninjago people? Somehow it seemed more plausible to imagine Kai as small enough to bounce off the knee of the Red Ranger. (Plausible used in a relative sense, of course) A LEGO minifigure who is as tall as a human adult would be rather massive in width. Ansel seemed happy enough to see two of his favorites together and did not question my scale choices.
I did slip up last night, neglecting to passify the weapons. Hope the swords will not be an issue at school today.

Ninjago Kai with New Weapon
The latest episode of Ninjago during which the 5 guys receive new outfits and weapons created an immediate and intense need in both of my sons for updated LEGO minifigures, Kai in particular.

Black Ninja Fist for Ansel
Not one of my better napkin drawings, but concisely sums up our younger son's relationship to the world lately....and it was his request: "a fist, all black...even the eyes!"

Gold Ancient Dynasty Ninja Throwing a Punch for Ansel
Ansel is still thinking about being the "Gold Ancient Dynasty Ninja" for
Halloween. He posed for me so that I could get the fist just right.
