Scribblenauts is one of my personal favorite games for all of its edifying potential.  Typing nouns in the search field from a vocabulary of over 20,000 words allows the player to summon all sorts of characters and items, from "Quetzalcoatl" to "Barracuda" to "Public Address System."

My sons particularly appreciate the possibilities of words like "Rocket Launcher," "Special Atomic Demolition Munition" and "Gatling Gun."

While Scribblenauts is not strictly speaking a Nintendo game, it is playable on the DS and the Wii U, so I am going to include it in the series here.

Scribblenauts Unlimited Godzilla and Personal Avatar

Archer has been hard at work building various characters in Scribblenauts Unlimited on the Wii U. While he has produced considerably more complicated figures (Master Chief from Halo, or so I am told...) his avatar for himself is pretty plain.

As he's on a class field trip to the Natural History Museum, today is one of the rare occasions that Archer takes a packed lunch to school.

I'm a little out of practice on producing two napkins in one evening, so I was relieved that I did not have to draw anything particularly complicated...although I added Godzilla to the image just to make sure that I didn't get too much sleep last night.

Scribblenauts At Our House

 

Rarely are my sons drawn to an app or game that is age appropriate, and... dare I type the words?... educational.

Scribblenauts is one of the outstanding exceptions.  The game creates characters and objects based on the player's typed requests.  It is true that Archer loves it because he can ask for things like "Derringer" and actually get a specific sort of gun, so perhaps I should revise the age appropriate description.  But in a world that contains things like Grand Theft Auto (Archer is devastated that we will not let him play what he calls affectionately GTA) Scribblenauts looks really good to me.

Ansel is finally getting to the point that he can type in his own requests (with significant assistance) and the above characters hanging out around our couch are a few of his favorites:  The Grim Reaper riding a griffin, Anubis, the Minotaur (also summoned by "manbearpig") with the skeleton warrior on his back, and the Egyptian god Ra.  Lazy napkin decorator that I am, I neglected to draw one favorite, the "Antidisenstablishmentarian"(a guy in black with a red bandana over his face) who was riding a flying chimera.
