Cupcake with Cthulhu and Godzilla

Belated Birthday Napkin:

Assessing my kids’ tastes grows ever more challenging. The day when I was sure that drawing Batman and Lightning McQueen on a napkin would be satisfying to someone have definitely passed...(which is not to say that the four year old recipient of that napkin would not have given me extensive notes on how I could have done a better job)

Selecting gifts for the recent 17th birthday definitely presented a challenge as well. I picked out a couple of t-shirts, though I was concerned that they would be deemed hopelessly uncool.
But one of the two, featuring a fight poster proclaiming a match between Godzilla and Cthulhu was deemed “actually sort of fire” by the recipient, and he even wore it for his birthday party.  The other one hasn’t been worn and will go unmentioned here.

To go with the T-shirt, here is the napkin.
Will they fight over the cupcake? I made 96 mini cupcakes for the party and we still have an appalling number left a week later...so maybe not.

Kraken Loves Cthulhu for Valentines Day

Kraken Loves Cthulhu for Valentine’s Day:

Valentine’s Day has been pretty uneventful for us. The day went officially unacknowledged at both kids’ schools. Gone are the days of homemade Valentines for the whole class collected in a decorated shoebox. Both kids and my spouse claim to have little or no interest in chocolate, so not much gratification there either.

But I couldn’t let the day pass completely without comment.

We are still on a bit of a tentacle kick around here. Cthulhu mostly, but in a pinch, a Kraken will do.

My exacting younger son informed me that the Kraken is too octopuslike and not squidy enough. He also suggested that the ultimate Valentine’s Day image would be of two roses exchanging or sniffing a human. Perhaps next year?

And I just want to point out that I have not assumed the gender of either tentacle owner. (My kids have been embroidering the “did you just assume my gender meme” lately. More to come on that later, I am afraid)

Birthday Cthulhu

Our alien overlord would probably have preferred to be rendered in a darker color, but I find black frosting to be a bummer for all involved.

The cake is half the size of the usual birthday frosting holder. In fact, I cut it in half and stacked it, thus its barely rectangular shape.

While it is not my best cake decoration work, it does have an exceptionally large amount of frosting.

Cthulhu Christmas

Or Merry Cthulmas

Perhaps our alien overlord is dreaming of a white Christmas?

One can never disappoint around here with a Cthulhu drawing...except maybe if one drapes him with poorly drawn strings of popcorn.

Pomeranian Cthulhu

"It seemed to be a sort of monster...of a form which only a diseased fancy could conceive"
-H.P. Lovecraft

Our younger son still wants a dog, desperately...and it must be a Pomeranian despite shedding and allergy issues.

But perhaps a mixed breed?
Tentacles don't shed.

Cthulhu waits dreaming......

Chthulu and Godzilla

I Welcome Our Alien Overlord Cthulhu

In any substantial conversation about giant monsters (that one has with adolescent boys) there is always the consideration of size.

Whose monster is bigger?

A while back, (I am far behind in my napkin posts) our older son was on a bit of a Cthulhu kick. Now, I cannot recall what prompted it. Unfortunately, by the time I had drawn the napkin, he was mostly over it.

But, Cthulhu is claimed to be a whole lot larger than King Kong or assorted Kaiju- even the greatly enlarged Godzilla from the 2014 film.

Perhaps Godzilla will be like a mere action figure in comparison to our alien overlord.

Not that there is anything "mere" about Godzilla action figures.

Brain of Cthulhu, Second Form

"Really! I want to see a brain in my lunch!"

The Brain of Cthulhu is another unappetizing boss from the Terraria game.  While this flying, teleporting brain is perhaps not quite as lunch-spoiling as the previous napkin depicting the Wall of Flesh, I would not have drawn it had Ansel not insisted. I completely failed in my attempt to make it any more aesthetically pleasing.

As the napkins recipients' grandmother just pointed out to me, it does look like it is a heart being eaten by a brain. I suppose the metaphorical possibilities of that situation are extensive and fraught. My limited understanding, however,  is that the brain opens up to reveal the heart inside as the game progresses... so perhaps the suggestion is that the heart is chronically imperiled.

Or maybe it is just designed to be a nasty combination of vulnerable body parts and teeth and should not be given too much thought.

I hope it is not upsetting any impressionable 8 year olds at lunch today.
