Presidents’ Day

I asked my younger son what he thought I should draw for Presidents Day and he said, “A pug. Everyone likes pugs.” Ok. Here is the Mount Rushmore crew riding a pug...on a beach. Because if you are going to ride a giant pug, why not on a beach?

After my son looked at it, he told me that I should have drawn a pug with George Washington’s face instead.

Maybe next year?

Battlepug Rides the L Train

Battlepug has long been one of the kids' favorites: a cute dog that is enormous and able to eat enemies, other ridiculous animals, a little girl who swears, violence and tasteful nudity, what more could lower and middle school boys wish for?

Pugbuster with Giant Pug

Iron Man's Hulkbuster Meets Battlepug:

As previously mentioned, Iron Man's super-sized anti-Hulk suit was one of my sons' favorite parts of the recent Avengers movie... And giant dogs are always good.

Over the weekend, our older son kept telling me I should draw this "Pugbuster."  The main appeal of the idea seemed to be the name. We were all unclear on whether "Pugbuster" meant that the Pug was wearing the armored suit, or whether the suit was designed to fight a Pug the size of of the Hulk (and the size of Battlepug, one of our web comic favorites)

I am indecisive, and I enjoy drawing Pug faces, so I said yes to both scenarios.

This morning, looking at the napkins, my older son told me that I blew it- that I should have made the giant Pug Hulk green. My younger son said that the suit should have had an armored Pug face on it. I explained to him that I had considered that, but after finishing cleaning up the kitchen at midnight, I chose the easier path of just drawing a dog's face.  Drawing the rest of the suit had been challenge enough. He said, "Oh it's not hard, you just draw an Iron Man helmet and make the yellow part look like a Pug's face.....

Maybe next time.

Axe Cop, Battlepug and Dr. McNinja

 

"Why must I be plagued by these ridiculous animals?'

We've been catching up on several web comics that we follow during bedtime reading over the last couple of nights.  

Axe Cop, Battlepug, and Dr. McNinja all embrace the ridiculous and often include "inappropriate" content... making them particularly delightful as far as our sons are concerned.

Battlepug and Le Bruiser from Guarding the Globe for Ansel

Ansel loves super dogs even when they are hanging out and not looking particularly super:  Battlepug, from "Battlepug" by Mike Norton looms behind Le Bruiser from "Guarding the Globe" by Robert Kirkman and company.  When we arrived at school this morning, Ansel announced to his best friend, "I have TWO dogs on my napkin!"  I thought I would be getting some flack this morning for their passive poses, but Ansel was unusually pleased.

Battlepug and Valiant from Giants Beware for Archer

Heroic dogs from last night's bedtime reading: the titular Battlepug, by Mike Norton and another appearance by Valiant from Giants Beware.  As far as my sons are concerned, the inclusion of a humorous and violent canine improves any book immeasurably.  I can see that I will need to work on my knowledge of pug anatomy if this continues.

Ansel's instructions last night were explicit: Teen Titans Robin and Ace the Bat Hound had to be sitting on Battlepug and Robin needed to be waving his arm and saying "giddy up!" Ansel informed me this morning that the text should be in a word balloon.

Characters from the two things we read at bedtime last night: Robin from "Teen Titans Go!" and Battlepug from the latest and much awaited web comic update.  Robin's take on the situation would perhaps be: "Why must I be plagued by this ridiculous animal?!" Ansel's response this morning: "It takes a lot to make me laugh.  This does not make me laugh."

While they are probably not in the target demographic, so to speak, my sons were giddy with delight while reading Battlepug.  Homicidal cute animals, sword violence, and gratuitous nudity are three of their most favorite things.
